Accidentally taking 1 extra dose of your antibiotic is unlikely to cause you any serious harm. If you do not take it without a prescription, it can damage your immune system and increase the chances of getting side effects, such as pain in your stomach, diarrhoea, and feeling or being sick. There are various types of germs and viruses in the air. They lose the ability to resist and as a result, after the body becomes weak, the risk of being easily infected with any disease increases.

The common side effects include:

  • vomiting
  • nausea (feeling like you may vomit)
  • diarrhoea
  • bloating and indigestion
  • abdominal pain
  • loss of appetite

Some people may have an allergic reaction to antibiotics, especially penicillin and a type called cephalosporins. In very rare cases, this can lead to a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), which is a medical emergency.

The word antibiotic comes from the word anti-bios. Anti means against and BIOS means life. Antibiotics work against living bacteria and microorganisms.

How long you eat will depend on what kind of disease you have, that is, what kind of germs you have been infected with.

So no more taking antibiotics without a prescription from a registered doctor.
